Equal parts five-star hotel and deluxe conveyance, the Royal Scotsman is the United Kingdom’s only luxury sleeper train. In April, it will offer three itineraries that wind through some of Scotland’s most magnificent scenery. Lasting four or five nights, each has a specific theme exploring a facet of the country’s heritage. Options include the new Classic Whisky Journey, with requisite tastings of prestigious malts and distillery visits; the Country Homes and Gardens tour of renowned private estates, led by an expert guide; and the Classic Golf itinerary, which includes play at four landmark courses. Each Royal Scotsman trip is all-inclusive and intimate in scale: The Edwardian-style carriage, which serves gourmet meals, has a maximum capacity of just 36 travelers. The luxury coach, operated by Orient Express, departs from Edinburgh; rates start at $3,710 for two nights of travel in the Scottish Highlands and rise to more than $14,000 for a seven-day Grand Tour that includes Scotland, England, and Wales. There is also the option of reserving the entire locomotive for a customized private charter. (800.524.2420, www.orient-express.com)
